Shop with a Cop!
December
8th, 2007 at area Wal-Marts
The
Optimist SWAC program is a cooperative endeavor involving the Police
Department and area Optimist clubs. In general, the program works
as follows: Youngsters from low-income or underprivileged families
are identified for this holiday shopping opportunity. Police
Officers volunteer their off-duty time to participate in this community
activity. The officers use their squad cars to pick up the
youngsters from their homes and drive them to a participating Wal-Mart
store. Each child is given $100
to spend. The officers continue to escort the
youngsters with whom they are paired as they stroll up and down the
aisles filling their shopping carts with necessities and presents for
themselves and family members. With smiles on their faces and
their shopping carts filled, youngsters check out at the cashier’s
station with their $100 gift from the Optimist Club. To top it all
off, youngsters are taken to lunch provided free
by a participating restaurant.
Each Optimist club has its own unique ways of administering the program,
but this is the broad outline of how the Shop-With-A-Cop
program works. At times, several Optimist clubs come
together in a joint effort to provide for youngsters in several
communities. Most Optimist clubs run their SWAC
program in December; however, some Optimist clubs run
this program at other times of the year – such as the opening of a new
school year – to make sure that youngsters obtain the necessary items
for the new school year.
Regardless of the time of year that the Optimist club runs the SWAC
program, at the conclusion of their police-escorted time together, many
youngsters will have had the opportunity to fill a few of their personal
“Wish List” items and, in
the process, develop a new appreciation for the work of the police.

At the end of
each school year, Crossing Guards are honored for their untiring service to
school youth. We
visit them while they are working at their assigned stations, where they receive
a special recognition. |

The Optimist Creed
Promise
yourself . . .
to
be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind
to
talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet
to
make all your friends feel that there is something
in
them
to
look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true
to
think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best
to
be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
to
forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the
future
to
wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet
a smile
to
give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have
no time to criticize others
to
be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy
to permit the presence of trouble.
